Nella, Scott County, Arkansas, USA (North America) – July 2018 —I grew up in a microscopically small place called Nella Arkansas. This is a tiny community in the middle of a national Forest. It is halfway between Fort Smith and DeQueen Arkansas (roughly). It is near Rich Mountain. I grew up there in the 1970s and early 1980s. The nearest paved road (still to this day) is about 7 miles away. When I was there in the 1970s the nearest telephone would have been about 10 miles away. Granted this was before cell phones..so It might be different now. No traffic lights.. very few signs of any sort. Certainly everyone there knows each other. I never locked a door until I went away to college and I would never have imagined taking the keys out of the ignition of anything.. tractors, farm equipment, or vehicles..of which there would always have been 3 or 4 available. I did learn how to drive when I was 10 years old… the only time I would have encountered any sort of law enforcement type would have been when the local county sherriff was running for office.. Then they would know on the door and come on in your home and explain why you should vote for them.

Some dark things… It never occurred to me until I went to college that I had never really seen anyone of much different color. No blacks, very few hispanic, and no Asians…. nothing. I learned much later of the lynchings in nearby Mena that had taken place some decades before had made people afraid. It is sort of sickening to think about really. I liked the way I grew up…but maybe it would have been better to be around some more diversity. I do remember being able to go the creeks after working … when it was hot. It was nice to cool off. You would often run into neighborhood kids. We sort of all hung out together. We would also walk many many miles to visit with each other..or get to some place. We certainly wouldn’t have though twice about walking 5 miles to see a neighbor.

Lonoke, Lonoke County, Arkansas, USA (North America) — April 2018 — The City of Lonoke Is a rather small town heading the County Of Lonoke. On an Arkansas state map Lonoke is due east of Little Rock with Interstate 40 running right through. Lonoke is a small town that home to people from many walks in life, religion, and ethnicities. Life as it should be is the slogan you will pass when entering Lonoke from I-40 exit 175 although this slogan is debatable I love the fact that everything a person needs to survive can be found between our two stop lights. That is unless you require entertainment and fishing/ hunting does not fit the bill. Either way calls for a trip to the rural outskirts of town if not the State Capital is literally 20 minutes away. There are 14 Churches in operation giving you an abundance of options to worship. summer nights are as hot as summer days and I would advise staying put under the air conditioner as much as possible. Do not leave your doors open at night you will find that the bugs can be more troubling than any burglar. In Lonoke, It is wise to stock pile Mosquito Spray. the arrival of fall is always accompanied by the county fair and the rain shortly follows. winters never last long and your interest in Lonoke won’t either if you need excitement.
