Barrington, County of Bristol, State of Rhode Island, USA — December 2022 — OK, so I grew up in another part of Rhode Island, in the 1960s and 1970s. But Barrington was well known as the place where the rich people lived. Someone who had lived there caused a stir when she was quoted in the media comparing the women of Barrington to Stepford Wives, a reference to a movie where men replaced their real wives with look-a-like robots programmed to be perfect wives and homemakers. Of course, the Barrington women were plenty insulted, and I remember reading that some of them even gathered in public and sarcastically acted like the Stepford Wives in the movie. I also remember as a child hearing about the kidnapping of 2 children, a brother and sister, in Barrington. Several men were involved, and then one had a change of heart and let them go is how I remember it. I have been unable to find any articles on this incident to verify the details.
